The Magic of Local Markets

Curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

— Walt Disney

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the true spirit of a town and its people are best on display at local markets. With stalls brimming with fresh produce, artisan food, curios, and work by artists and craftspeople, markets offer a window into what makes a community distinct.

In Palm Springs, there are many opportunities to experience our local flavors and vibrancy. The joy of markets is that they allow you to slow down, meander a little, and follow your curiosity to new discoveries and delights.

Chris Hagen, Chef Concierge at Parker Palm Springs knows where to go and what to see. “There are a variety of exceptional markets in the Palm Springs area,” she says, “and each one offers something unique and interesting.”

Coachella Valley Certified Farmers’ Market

Our region is blessed with one of the finest growing environments in the country and the quality and variety of food is mouthwatering. The Coachella Valley Certified Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday from 8:30am to 1:30pm, is a wonderful way to sample the flavors of the area and connect with locals. Located outdoors next to the Camelot Theater, this Palm Springs farmers market offers chef demonstrations, live music, and programs for kids. Note: From June to September the market moves indoors to beat the heat.

Village Fest

Every Thursday evening from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs is transformed into a festival of food, music, and art. Additionally, many stores along the Drive stay open late, offering Palm Springs shopping at its finest. “It’s a really fun, different place to go,” Chris says. “Stroll through the 180-plus vendors, enjoy some street food, explore the shops, there is so much to see and do.” Nearby, the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center stays open until 7:00pm on Thursday. “Palm Springs is a hub for mid-century design and architecture,” says Chris, “and the Center is a wonderful way to see that history.”

Palm Springs Vintage Market

Another well-known aspect of Palm Springs is its love affair with all things vintage. From October to May, enthusiasts flock to the Palm Springs Vintage Market, held on the first Sunday of every month, beside the Camelot Theater. The city’s standing as a center for mid-century modernism means there are lots of vintage items, antiques, fashion, and objects d’art to be discovered, many unique and only available in Palm Springs. “It’s a great place to explore,” Chris says. “You never know what you are going to find.”

When your day is done and it is time to relax, the perfect bar stool awaits you back at Parker Palm Springs. Counter Reformation offers a menu of small plates and an eclectic curation of wines by the glass. It is the kind of place where stories are told, legends are made, and the simple pleasures of life are celebrated. With, or without a shopping bag.
