Orson Wells tells a story about his legendary film Citizen Kane, a masterpiece of style, lighting, and storytelling. Hailed as groundbreaking for its inventive cinematic technique, Mr. Wells said the reason his film turned out the way it did was because he didn’t know the ‘rules’ about how to make a film. Later in his career, having learned these so-called film rules, he happily ignored them.
Breaking the rules are what short films are all about and the annual Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, running from June 24 – 30, will again feature groundbreaking cinema from around the world. The films may be shorter but the onscreen talent is big. From first-time, soon-to-be-famous filmmakers to work from established stars, the event showcases an incredible range of talent, voices, and perspectives. With more than 300 films from 60+ countries, each screening is followed by a Q&A. This is a red carpet event without the tuxedos and a wonderful way to experience the essence and craft of filmmaking.

ACT I – Poolside Cabana
A woman (our Heroine) swims gentle laps in the crystal clear pool. Reaching the steps, she rises, the water shimmering in the sun on her stunning bathing suit. She saunters over to her private cabana, not letting on that she notices the admiring glances of others. As she towels dry, a member of the Cabana Team glides by with a gorgeous-looking cocktail and a complimentary fruit kabob. Settling in, she lays back in her shaded enclave, refreshments in hand, trying to decide which to enjoy first. She solves her dilemma by dipping the kabob in the cocktail before taking a juicy, delicious bite.
ACT II – Palm Springs Yacht Club
A massage table sits in the middle of a warm, cozy room at Palm Springs Yacht Club, our renowned on-property spa (the one Vogue magazine raves about). Our Heroine is facedown, a towel covers her waist as her skin glistens under the hands of a masseur. She lets out a gentle sigh before drifting into a state of blissful relaxation. It’s a scene that plays out daily at the very best spa in Palm Springs.
ACT III – mister parker’s
Feeling refreshed, our Heroine is ready for an evening of excitement. She stands in front of a long mirror to inspect her outfit — little black dress, matching shoes, and jewelry that’s understated but impossible to ignore. If any picture is worth a thousand words, this is it. Our Heroine exits her room and we trail after her. Moments later, she arrives at a red velvet curtain where her Escort, dressed in a fine collared shirt and jacket, awaits. He holds back the curtain and follows her into a fine dining destination unlike any other, anywhere.
Dark, discreet, and decadent, mister parker’s is dedicated to extending the pleasure principle. The menu is a blend of epicurean, savory favorites and Chef’s personal inspirations but you are more than welcome to order a martini in lieu of an entrée. Our Heroine enjoys a long, slow, delicious evening of food, wine, and intimate conversation. We may not be able to hear their words but we know what they’re saying.
