Desert in Bloom
“The desert tells a different story every time you visit.”
— Robert Edison Fuller Jr.
Ah, the promise of spring. Full of warmth and hope, at this time of year the desert around Palm Springs is also full of color. As the days get longer and at the first sign of moisture (we’ve had a bit this year), the flora bursts into a dazzling array of hues. Offering incredible landscapes, natural beauty, and stunning vistas, now is the perfect time for an unforgettable Palm Springs road trip vacation.
A good journey is one part itinerary and one part spontaneity. Have a plan of course, but also be willing to take the occasional left turn — it’s in these moments when true discovery happens. Here are some of our favorite places to visit along with a few local tips to help make your Palm Springs driving adventure a memorable one.
Joshua Tree National Park
Undoubtedly one of our country’s most cherished wilderness areas. The iconic namesake trees and unique topography make the park a bucket list destination. The Joshua Tree driving route is less than an hour from Parker Palm Springs. We recommend entering the park on the north side along Highway 62 where Joshua trees are most abundant (they bloom February-May). The best place to stretch your legs is the Hidden Valley Loop Trail. It’s a one-mile walk that winds through quintessential terrain, including large rock outcrops that were once used by bandits to hide their stolen cattle.
Travel Tip: On the way back, take a 15-minute detour to Pioneer Town, which has a genuine old west feel. The best watering hole is Poppy & Harriet’s. The food is first-class and they have regular live music.
Indian Canyons
A collection of three stunning settings – Palm Canyons, Andreas Canyon, and Murray Canyon – the Indian Canyons represent one of the most distinct desert environments anywhere in the country. They look like something out of an old Hollywood movie. The canyons are considered sacred by the Cahuilla Indians and the tribe continues to act as custodians of the area for the benefit of future generations.
Travel tip: Access is year-round. If you are looking for a quick, stretch-the-legs walk, try the short loop at beautiful Andreas Canyon.
Banning-Idyllwild Panoramic Highway
Snaking high into the San Jacinto mountains, the rewards of this drive are the spectacular views of Coachella Valley and beyond. Start from the north end and you’ll ascend a series of switchbacks before the road levels off. Indian Vista Lookout and San Jacinto State Park are our recommended spots to stop and take in the scenery.
Travel tip: This is the ideal excuse to enjoy one of our special picnic baskets. If you have any questions or need assistance planning your road trip itinerary, please speak to our Concierge.
